How to Determine Your Own Interior Design Style

Our spaces say so much about us, who we are, and what we like to do. This is why identifying your own interior design style is the necessary first step in curating your home, or office. My goal is to help you love the end result and to ensure it feels unique to you and your lifestyle. Ready to get started?

Expose Yourself to New Design Styles

Once you have narrowed in on the room you will be styling and its main functions, flipping through physical magazines is a great way to narrow down your options. Starting online can sometimes feel a bit more daunting, with the numerous interior blogs and websites so we like to start with a design issue or publication. I trust that the editors have narrowed down a few specific styles for us, and from there we can take that information online to shop or scroll through other imagery! A few of my favorite magazines are Architectural Digest, Dwell, Better Homes and Gardens, and lastly Cabana Magazine which is a design element in itself, perfect for styling any coffee or side table. Spending time understanding seasonal design trends will allow you guidance for your future project.

Curate a Moodboard on Pinterest

Now that you’ve gained a bit of knowledge from flipping through different digests and publications, take some of the elements or topics you noticed and continue to find images online. This will provide you with more styling of a certain piece of furniture or room. Pinterest and Instagram both act as great sources for photos of “mid-century modern design” or “colorful couches” whatever it may be that you’re now specifically searching for. Go down rabbit holes, and save images to designated folders, so that you can explore while keeping yourself and your finds organized.

Talk To Friends

The next time you’re over at your friend’s house or in a colleague’s office space look around at the design choices they’re making. Some of it may speak to you, or rather it might not, and this will allow you to determine more about your own personal style and taste. Do they have plants or certain artwork that you find tasteful? Does the space have a lot of furniture or only a few very specific pieces? Does it look more eclectic or more minimal? Asking a friend or colleague where they shop for pieces, or where they look for design inspiration is a great way to ensure that your end product will be personal because of your thoughtful decision-making.

Hire a Professional

If the above options don’t sound enticing, or you think you may need a little extra guidance it could be time to seek the help of an interior designer. Linked here is a questionnaire that I have all my potential clients fill out, in order to better understand the way I can assist. Perhaps you’re unsure of how to get started, or you have half of a vision but need help following through. Whatever it may be, don’t hesitate to reach out. You want to ensure that your end product is better than how you started, and sometimes it doesn’t hurt to ask for a little bit of help!

These are suggestions we make when clients or friends ask how to choose an interior design style when they seem ever-changing! Go with what you know, what you see, what you enjoy! And if you need help along the way, you know where to find me.
