The Design History of Saltillo Tile
The History of Saltillo tile begins around 1580 when the people of Saltillo Coahuila started making clay tile from the local mud, drying it out in the hot sun. It is still used today in both residential and commercial spaces, providing that warm rustic feel often found in Spanish-style decor and complimentary to Mediterranean and Tuscan homes. There are a few reasons I love to use this type of tile in my projects.
it’s handmade
No two tiles are the same. Each tile is handmade, and fired at a relatively low temperature. Unlike the norm, Saltillo tile with cracks, animal footprints, and general wear and tear are specifically sought after. Any added texture is always welcome, and adds to the overall unique look and feel. Saltillo tile is both eco-friendly and biodegradable, making you feel that much better when using it in a remodel or home renovation.
the clay quality
An authentic Saltillo tile will be made from riverbed clay, from Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico. Some of the most durable clay in the world. With the proper care, the tiles can last a lifetime and beyond. It’s valuable to note that while all Saltillo tiles are made from terracotta clay, Not all terracotta tiles are gorgeous handmade Saltillo tiles. Once the clay is harvested and mixed, it is then hand-packed into wooden molds and left in the sun to dry. Once dry, these tiles are stacked in wood burning-kilns where they are fired for 24 hours.
the style
Other than being an amazingly low-cost flooring option, Saltillo tile offers up a beautiful rustic aesthetic, and a really dynamic look as they are designed in such decorative shapes. As mentioned, they are often found in Spanish-style spaces but are also often found in beach houses or wineries, any place where a warmer, more natural look fits well with the surroundings. They can be used both inside, as a backsplash, in bathrooms on kitchen islands and decorative walls, or outside for a beautiful patio, lovely pathway, or rustic stairway. They are incredibly easy to keep clean using water and soap and the occasional vacuum to get rid of dust. The best part, they easily conceal dirt. The Saltillo tile is so versatile, it’s an easy choice every time.
Saltillo tile can be covered with a sealant in order to add shine or color, or left plain as its original nature already showcases beautiful rich hues of brown, red, and orange.
