Trend Alert: Coastal Grandmother Style
You may have heard of the latest internet-famous trend, “Coastal Grandmother” which glorifies and highlights the sort of laid-back, elegant, chic, and cozy style that we often see a grandmother who lives along the coast sporting. Think Martha Stewart, Better Homes & Gardens, linen pants paired with cozy knit cardigans, and big vases filled with hydrangeas on the countertops. ‘Anybody who loves Nancy Meyer’s Films, coastal vibes, recipes and cooking, Ina Garten, cozy interiors’ says Lex Nicoleta, the influencer who coined the now popular term. I love how this trend has created an appreciation for more traditional New England styles and below are a few ways to incorporate this timeless style into your space.
Patterned Couch
This is for those of you who love a more a maximal look, and aren’t afraid to go bolder with your furniture. I absolutely adore how fun and vintage a patterned print on a couch looks and the Dorsey Corrine Sofa from Anthropologie is fully leaning into the look! Of course, there are other styles of vintage couches like ones with more sculptural traditional shapes like the Audie 60” Rolled Arm Love Seat from Birch Lane that has a much more nautical, and classic New England style look and feel. That being said, an easy way to upgrade your current sofa into this style is by reupholstering it in a fabric of your choice. Be it a chic white linen or a printed pattern, it will help you achieve this look without having to buy a whole new couch.

Statement Mirror
A statement mirror above a fireplace, leaning against a wall, or at the end of a long hallway looks good in any style, but in the world of coastal grandmothers, they tend to choose more vintage than modern. This large floor-length mirror from Crate & Barrel is seen here in a more modern room and thus creates a balanced but equally dynamic look. This is a great way to balance both a minimal modern aesthetic with vintage, traditional aesthetics. The Regeant Mirror from West Elm is another

Table Linens
Do it up big and lean into table decor, with oversized floral arrangements, antique dishes, and beautiful tablecloths. Block print or checkered tablecloths are beautiful, classic styles that will never lead you astray. A favorite of mine is this black and white check print from Pottery Barn, perfect for any time of the year. Another is this beautiful Blue Handprinted Tablecloth from Pomegranate which leans into a more coastal look but almost French coastal look.

Floral Bedding
For a while, white linen was all that we were seeing on beds for the last few years, but this has started to shift. Rosy bed sheets and floral duvet covers are coming back, and the feminine traditional look is so sweet and yes, very grandma-in the best way! This look feels pretty and timeless and offers the same sort of luxe comfort that a more minimal style can, but in a different way. These Ditsy Floral Organic Percale Sheets from Pottery Barn are perfectly whimsical and come in three different colorways, each bright and cheerful. I equally love how sweet and subtle this Toile Duvet from Urban Outfitters is, timeless and exactly what your grandmother would have on her own bed.

Throws & Blankets
Nothing says Grandma’s house more than a large basket of comfy throws and blankets to bundle yourself up in when around the fire or snoozing in the living room. Everything about cozy and chic applies here and of course vintage, which is why I chose to feature this beautiful Jaxson Quilt from Pottery Barn. It is great draped over a large leather couch, or even at the end of a bed. Nothing feels more timeless than a beautiful quilt, and they are back in both fashion and interiors. Another beautiful must-have blanket in your basket is a large white blanket. The Wicked Cozy Waffle Blanket from L.L Bean is what comes to mind, and like any true coastal, especially New England, grandmother, L.L Bean is a staple in every home. Warm and cozy, and doing so in style is the exact sort of thing that completes the Coastal Grandmother aesthetic.
